As long as there is a person, for so much time he has been developing building materials for the construction of his dwellings and buildings for other purposes. At first, of course, only natural materials were used as they existed. Then they began to be processed, then their qualities began to improve in a variety of ways, for example, impregnation of wooden boards with all sorts of resins and oils.

The moment came when composite materials appeared, but, of course, they were based on the same natural materials and substances, albeit well processed. But now, finally, the time has come when man has learned to obtain artificial substances, and to produce completely new building materials on their basis.

Bakelite is a thermosetting plastic.

With the development of the chemical industry, builders got their hands on a variety of artificial materials, the bulk of which were polymer materials. The polymer is a classic plastic, only significantly improved and received the most varied qualities. One of the first plastics, which became very widespread in the first half of the last, twentieth century, was Bakelite – the so-called thermosetting plastic, made on the basis of cellulose filler and phenol-formaldehyde resin binder.

The experience of using this hard, chemically resistant, dielectric and antifriction plastic prompted chemists and technologists to create a completely new material with unique properties – bakelized plywood. In fact, this plywood could be considered a composite material, just like fiberglass or carbon fiber plastics. Only this material was created on the basis of the fiber structure of natural wood.

What bakelite plywood is made of.

For the manufacture of bakelized plywood, mostly natural birch veneer is used. The plates of this veneer, appropriately processed, are glued together in a package in mutually perpendicular layers using a large amount of an adhesive composition made on the basis of phenol-formaldehyde resins. At the same time, the pores of the wood and its interfiber channels are filled with a high-strength binder, giving the wood qualitatively new properties that were previously not possible to achieve with the help of any of the existing technologies.

The advantages of bakelite plywood.

In addition to being impregnated with resins, the properties of the veneer change as a result of compaction during standard hot pressing during gluing. Bakelite plywood gains strength comparable to that of engineering plastics, light alloys and unalloyed steel, and even surpasses it in terms of weight-to-strength ratio. At the same time, its processing with the use of electrified and manual carpentry and construction tools does not cause any problems.

Moreover, according to these parameters, it is as easy to work with it as with ordinary wood or plastic, but the results of this work significantly exceed the results that could be obtained when working with the above materials.

Bakelite plywood properties.

Bakelite plywood, due to its outstanding qualities, works well with standard fasteners and holds paint well. It is resistant to aggressive substances and can withstand dozens of work cycles as a formwork, for example, during concrete work, where it is often subjected to very significant mechanical loads, dampness and highly alkaline liquid concrete. Plywood has excellent heat resistance, can withstand prolonged exposure and even boiling in water without significant loss of strength and unwanted changes in size and shape during operation.

Due to its high moisture resistance in everyday life, this material is often called marine plywood, although marine plywood, as a brand, is made from completely different types of wood and with different technological standards, as a result of which it is inferior to bakelite plywood in both strength and durability. Here, of course, its synthetic component affects, which does not allow the fiber base to deteriorate under any conditions.

Application of bakelite plywood.

The thickness of the plywood produced varies from 0.5 to 5 centimeters, the usual sheet size is 5700×1250 mm. It is this format that allows you to use plywood, avoiding unnecessary splices and seams. Since bakelite plywood holds its shape well, it is excellent for arranging all kinds of flooring, leveling floors, creating a roofing base, elements of small architecture in the garden and on a personal plot, it can also be used as the main structural material in machine tools, car building and even in the creation of cars and small aircraft.
